2005 Season Outlook By Position
Although the practice season is just underway postition battles have started. There appears to be depth at many positions. 2005 should be an exciting year. The Big 3, Justin Kaufman, Matt Loy, and Ty Bontrager all return after having stellar junior seasons. Ryan Smith also contributed nicely on the mound and looks to build from the '04 season. The 2005 version of the Warriors features talented youngsters. Sophmores Keaton McDonald and Lee Miller, the only other non-senior returning letter winners, look to solidify the line up with steady play. A talented group of freshmen are going to be thrown into the fire right away. Anthony Roth, Chase Fennell, Seth Joyce, and Justin Brandenberger will all be competing for regular starting postitions. Matt Hostetler, crafty with the glove, looks to fill a back up role at 1st base.
Catchers: Matt Loy improved greatly game by game last season. He will be out for the first couple of weeks recovering from a broken wrist. Ty Bontrager will fill the void in the mean time. Freshman Joey Steider will be used as the back up to both of them.
1st Base: Justin Kaufman returns for a 4th year at 1st. He has developed nicely there and will handle it when not pitching. The back up battle will be between Matt Hostetler, Seth Joyce, and Anthony Roth.
2nd Base: Keaton McDonald is the front runner. Keaton appeared in 6 games last season and handled all chances without error. Keaton will certainly have a back up, but too early to tell who that might be.
Shortstop: Still up in the air between youngsters Lee Miller, Justin Brandenberger and Chase Fennell. All three are good athletes and are competing for the premere posistion. It may be awhile before we find out for sure who fits the mold the best, but we have 3 quality players, two of which will probably find their role in the outfield.
3rd Base: Ty Bontrager will be back at the hot corner once Loy returns. In the meantime Seth Joyce and several others are in contention to fill in and serve as a back up.
Outfield: Many names and quality outfielders in this group. Ryan Smith, Anthony Roth, Lee Miller, Chase Fennell, Justin Brandenberger,Hugo Ortiz and Seth Joyce will probably see time.
Pitchers: Justin Kaufman leads the attack from the mound. Kaufman showed promise last year. His command and velocity look much improved. Lefty Anthony Roth looks to make a splash. He will throw strikes and wear batters out with his variety of pitches and location. Ryan Smith pitched well in several games when in counted and looks improved. Ty Bontrager often found success and will be looked upon to close games out. Lee Miller, Seth Joyce, and Chase Fennell will also see some innings this season.
